How Much to Pay a Dog Sitter: Per Day & Per Week Guide

How Much to Pay a Dog Sitter: Per Day & Per Week Guide

Breaking Down Dog Sitting Rates

Several factors come into play when estimating a dog sitter's cost. Some factors that can affect dog sitting rates are:

  • Location of Dog Sitting (In-home or at a boarding facility)
  • Experience of the Dog Sitter
  • Services Offered (Walks, overnight, feeding, etc)
  • Length of Visit

Factors Influencing Dog Sitter Fees

Region and Location

Dog-sitting prices vary from state to state and within states. Areas with more demand will see higher prices. Dog sitters in urban areas tend to charge more because it is usually their full-time job. Additionally, living in a big city is more expensive, and it costs more to travel around.

Dog’s Age and Needs

The needs and age of your dog are also crucial factors for determining cost. Senior dogs require more time, services such as medications, and attention than younger dogs. Puppies, especially during potty training, need a lot of oversight.

Duration of Sitting

Dog-sitting services come in several different lengths. You could hire a dog sitter to watch your dog overnight while you're on vacation for a week or ask for daily visits/walks. Each length of service will cost a different fee.

Sitter’s Experience and Qualifications

The experience and qualifications of your dog sitter will also affect the fees. Experienced dog sitters with certifications in first aid, CPR, grooming, and other services will charge more. While you may want a cheaper alternative, turning down an experienced professional is challenging.

Additional Services

Some dog sitters perform additional services for a fee. Some of these services include:

  • Walking
  • Grooming
  • Training

Average Daily Rates for Dog Sitting

In-Home Dog Sitting

Many sitters will care for your dog at your home. In this case, a dog sitter will frequently visit your home or stay overnight. This keeps your pet comfortable but is the most expensive option for long-term care due to the costs incurred by the sitter. In-home dog sitting ranges from $30 to $75 per day.

Boarding

Most owners will board their dogs if they need to be away for a night or more. For this service, you will bring your dog to a boarding facility. Many facilities offer a room for your dog. They will handle all his needs, including water, food, pet supplies, and sleep, in their facility. Most boarders charge between $25 and $65 per day.

Additional Services

The fees can vary widely for services such as dog walking, pop-in visits, and grooming services. Many of the services may come discounted if attached to larger services. Dog walking services may charge as low as $10 per day.

Weekly Rates and Discounts

For long-term services, such as a daily dog sitter or an extended vacation, you should look for weekly rates and discounts. When buying in bulk, you save! Often, around major holidays, dog sitters will give a reduced rate if you book early as well.

If you book a daily dog sitter long-term, you may receive discounts for the long-term commitment. Additionally, many boarders will do the same for visits that are a week or more. Always ask your dog sitter for any possible discounts or bulk buy rates.
