Wrist Splints for Carpal Tunnel - Are They Beneficial?

Wrist Splints for Carpal Tunnel - Are They Beneficial?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist's carpal tunnel and is one of the most common issues people experience with their hands. When the median nerve is compromised, it causes a number of symptoms, including numbness, tingling, and hand weakness. These symptoms can be debilitating for some people, but luckily, there are several therapy and treatment options for individuals suffering from carpal tunnel.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is often caused and worsened by repetitive hand and wrist motions. Individuals working in a factory setting or on computers for long hours will sometimes experience carpal tunnel syndrome.

While some individuals notice symptoms of carpal tunnel in both hands, it is more likely to occur in the dominant hand. Proper treatment and therapy can help to alleviate and eliminate numbness and restore normal function to the hands and wrists.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms

Most cases of carpal tunnel syndrome start slowly and progress over time. The first signs are tingling and numbness in the fingers. It might feel like your hand “falls asleep” frequently while holding items. Some people experience pain in their hands, but not all.

Weakness will follow the numbness, making it harder to grasp objects, especially with your thumb, which is controlled by the median nerve. If you notice frequent tingling in your hand or fingers, consult your doctor about a diagnosis and treatment options.

What Makes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Worse?

Repetitive motions, overstretching, and overusing your wrist will make symptoms worse. While it is not always possible to avoid repetitive activities, rest your wrist periodically throughout the day. If your job requires repetitive motions, consult your doctor to learn more about ergonomic options to alleviate wrist strain.

How Can a Wrist Brace Help?

Individuals suffering from mild carpal tunnel syndrome can benefit from wearing a splint for support. Many people use splints at night to keep their wrists neutral, eliminating the chances of your hand bending at an awkward angle and putting more pressure on the carpal tunnel. Remove the splint and move your wrist to prevent the joint from becoming stiff and atrophying the muscles. Periodically wearing a splint has been shown to improve symptoms within a few weeks in some people.

How to Wear a Wrist Brace

There are several wrist/hand braces available. A carpal tunnel brace does not have a metal spine on the palm side of the brace. A metal spine on the palm can increase pressure on the carpal tunnel and cause worsening symptoms. You want to avoid any brace or splint that applies additional pressure. Some carpal tunnel braces have a movable metal spine that can be adjusted based on the needs.

Where to Get a Carpal Tunnel Wrist Brace

Benefab's Therapeutic Fingerless Gloves offer a therapeutic option for carpal tunnel syndrome sufferers. Made with thin, durable material, these gloves are infused with Far-infrared fibers and deliver all the benefits of pressure gloves without the discomfort of compressions.

These gloves help harmonize bodily functions safely and naturally while stimulating recovery time, promoting blood circulation, and reducing pain and stiffness. The material is breathable and comfortable even in warmer climates.
