Best Essential Oils for Dog Arthritis

Apr 21, 2023
Best Essential Oils for Dog Arthritis

It can be challenging as our dogs get older. They have been our constant companions through job changes, adventures, traveling, and more. So, when you notice your dog is getting a little stiff and moving slower, the first thing you want to do is help them. Several prescription and over-the-counter medications relieve the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. However, essential oils have medicinal properties if you are looking for a natural alternative.

How to use Essential Oils for Dogs

There are several ways to use essential oils for your dog. Some essential oils are more effective in the air, while others should be applied to the dog’s bed or directly to the skin with carrier oils. Make sure to follow the directions for the specific essential oil.

Here are a few ways to use essential oils:

  • Add essential oil to a diffuser
  • Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water and spray around the room
  • Add a drop to your dog’s bed or collar
  • Rub a few drops in your palms and run your hands over your dog’s coat
  • Add a few drops to shampoo during bath time (avoid getting too close to their eyes)

Essential Oils for Dog Arthritis

Best Essential Oils for Dog ArthritisWhen selecting an essential oil brand, research the quality and source of ingredients. Quality is vital for essential oils. You also want to avoid any fillers or other ingredients in the essential oil. Young Living and Doterra are both high-quality essential oil companies to try.

Lavender

Most people are familiar with lavender as a soothing scent, but lavender is packed with medicinal properties. Lavender has healing properties, is an anti-inflammatory, and works well for irritated and inflamed skin. Lavender can be used as aromatherapy or applied to your dog’s coat to help reduce inflammation.

Chamomile

Chamomile is another herb associated with calming down and relaxing. When chamomile is applied to the skin, it acts as an anti-inflammatory. Chamomile strength varies significantly based on brand, so we recommend consulting your veterinarian on proper dosage before use.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a multi-functional essential oil for dogs. It works as an anti-inflammatory, creates a numbing effect, and is especially good for dogs with joint pain. It can also be used for digestive upsets. You can apply essential oil diluted with a carrier oil directly to the affected joints. Some dogs are sensitive to peppermint, so start with a tiny amount and watch for any change in behavior, such as whining or scratching.

Frankincense

Frankincense is a potent essential oil and is one of the few to cross the brain/blood barrier. Along with reducing inflammation, it can improve GI issues, heal skin, and improve respiratory problems. Frankincense should be applied directly to the affected area to help increase movement. Do not feed frankincense essential oil to your dog.

Other Resources for Dog Arthritis

It is important to consult your veterinarian before treating your dog with essential oils. They will work with you to create a treatment plan specifically for your dog, its issues, and other health concerns. The treatment plan could include essential oils and other alternative therapies such as acupuncture, far infrared therapy, and chiropractics to relieve pain and inflammation.
