Showing Cattle Equipment: Your Guide for Competition

Showing Cattle Equipment: Your Guide for Competition

Types of Showing Cattle Equipment

Cattle need specialized equipment when traveling to, preparing for, and entering the show ring. These tools help improve control, appearance, and handling while showing. Every tool has a distinct purpose and helps with a specific task.

Show Halters and Leads

Show halters and leads are designed to secure cattle so that the handler has control over the animal, can provide commands, but also does not cause the animal discomfort. Show halters come in several designs and materials to give you the look you're aiming for. Show halters can be rope, leather, or other synthetic materials. There are several different lead styles available, but be sure to check your show requirements. Some shows have rules for lead length, appearance, and material. Make sure to check the fit of the halter before show day to ensure it fits correctly and isn’t too snug.

Show Sticks

Cattle are almost always much bigger than their handlers. Though good training can make an animal easier to work with, sometimes some extra motivation is needed. Many handlers choose to use a show stick. This stick is comfortable to hold and has a pointed end. Handlers will use it to gently nudge the cattle’s legs and body into a proper stance or movement. The stick should be slightly shorter than the cattle's length to make reaching easier for the handler.

Portable Panels and Gates

If pens are not offered at the show, you may need to bring your own. Safety is the most important concern. Portable panels and gates create temporary pens, walkways, and holding areas. These panels can range in size to fit your animal's needs. They are easy to assemble and transport.

Essential Equipment for Cattle Presentation

Besides safety and handling equipment, you will also need supplies to keep your cattle looking their best. These tools require skill and attention to detail. Showmanship matters in the ring, and these tools can help make or break it.

Blowers and Dryers

Blowers and dryers remove moisture from the cattle’s fluffy coat. Handlers and groomers use high-powered handheld or stand-mounted machines that produce strong airflow without overheating and frying the coat. They speed up the drying process and help remove trapped water below the surface of the coat. Overall, blowers and dryers make grooming and clipping easier.

Clippers and Trimmers

Clippers and trimmers are essential tools for cutting the coat and creating defined lines along the animal’s body. Select a high-quality clipper with the correct clipper blades to ensure a smooth clip. If you haven’t clipped cattle before, ask an experienced groomer to help. Trimmers can be used to work the fine detail areas around the face, hooves, and legs to define muscle and smooth appearance.

Combs and Brushes

After the washing, drying, and clipping are done, your cattle will need to be brushed. Proper brushing adds health and luster to the coat. Different combs and brushes provide different benefits, such as:

  • Removing dirt

  • Removing hair

  • Detangling

  • Smoothing

  • Promoting coat shine
