How to Get That Show-Ready Shine: Skin and Coat Care Tips

How to Get That Show-Ready Shine: Skin and Coat Care Tips

A shiny coat starts with good nutrition, but most experienced horse people know there are still plenty of grooming tricks that make a big difference on show day. When you walk into the arena, that first impression matters. The judge is looking at the whole picture, condition, turnout, and how well your horse is presented.

That’s why preparing for the ring doesn’t start the morning of, it starts weeks (and even months) ahead.

Get a Head Start

If you’re clipping, do it the week before the show so you have time to fix anything you missed. It also keeps you from rushing around at the last minute—which is not good for you or your horse's nerves.

Make sure your brushes are clean, too. Dirty brushes just put dust back into the coat instead of helping it shine.

Feet and Legs

  1. Clip legs a few days before the show so any irritation has time to settle down. This is especially important for white legs.

  2. White legs look best when they’re washed the morning of the show, so they stay bright and clean.

  3. For hooves, a sanding block helps smooth everything out and gives a nice even finish. Finish them off with a good hoof polish for a finishing touch.

Coat Shine

  1. When you bathe your horse, rinse thoroughly. Any leftover shampoo residue will dull the coat instead of helping it shine.

  2. Daily currying helps bring out natural oils and gives the coat a healthier shine.

  3. At the show, give your horse a good all-over brushing. A light coat spray can help bring out extra shine, but try not to overdo sprays—they can cause the coat to become too slick making saddles slip, etc.

  4. Proper nutrition, including flaxseed or omega-3 supplements, can also help improve coat condition from the inside out.

  5. Right before you go in, run a clean towel over the body to take off any dust or sweat.

Mane and Tail

  1. Make sure the mane and tail are clean before the show. Most people wash them the night before or the morning of.

  2. Use a wide-tooth comb while they’re still damp to get the tangles out without breaking the hair.

  3. If you wash the tail the night before, a loose braid and tail bag will keep it clean overnight. In the morning, take it out and comb through it.

  4. A light detangler or shine spray can help.

Face and Ears

  1. Clip the bridle path and ears the day before the show so everything looks clean and polished.

  2. It is usually easier to bathe after clipping so you can wash away loose hair.

  3. A little baby oil on a cloth can be used very lightly around the eyes, nose, and ears for a clean, finished look, but don’t overdo it.

Attention to detail separates a good turnout from a great one. A clean face enhances your horse’s expression and overall presentation.

But, you should avoid trimming whiskers. Though many people do it in the United States, in other parts of the world it is outlawed. A horse’s whiskers play a far more important role than most people realize. As specialized sensory organs (vibrissae), they give horses the ability to detect nearby objects, move safely in low light, and sense the ground just below their line of sight. Trimming them away disrupts this natural awareness system and can leave a horse feeling disoriented, stressed, and more vulnerable to facial injury.

Nutrition

Nutrition plays a major role in keeping your horse’s coat healthy and shiny from the inside out. Feeding balanced protein levels, providing essential vitamins and minerals, and adding omega fatty acids like flaxseed can all help improve coat quality. Keeping your horse on a regular deworming schedule is just as important for overall health and appearance.

Clean, fresh water should always be available. A properly hydrated horse will usually have healthier skin, a softer coat, and stronger hooves. During hot weather or periods of heavy work, electrolytes can also help maintain hydration.

Benefab® Rejuvenate Smartscrim

While the Rejuvenate SmartScrim is primarily designed for therapeutic benefits, helping promote circulation, muscle relaxation, recovery, and overall comfort, it can also be a useful part of your daily grooming routine. Keeping a horse clean between baths and grooming sessions can be a challenge, especially at shows or during travel, and the Smartscrim offers an extra layer of protection to help maintain that polished appearance while also supporting the horse pre- and post-ride.

When used in the stall, the SmartScrim helps keep dust, shavings, and debris from settling directly into the coat, which can cut down on the amount of brushing needed before heading to the arena. It can also help minimize hair transfer and keep the coat laying smooth and flat, giving your horse a cleaner, more finished look.

During travel, the SmartScrim provides lightweight coverage that helps protect the coat from dirt and rubbing while keeping the horse comfortable. For horses that are clipped or carefully groomed for competition, this added protection can help preserve the hard work you’ve already put into preparing them for the show ring.

Used alongside regular grooming, proper nutrition, and good coat care practices, the SmartScrim can be another helpful tool for maintaining a healthy, show-ready appearance.
